Galveston County Fair & Rodeo: 5 Reasons to Attend

Thursday, April 14, 2022

There are many reasons to enjoy Houston in the spring, but the rodeo season tops it all off. Following in its big brother's, Rodeo Houston, footsteps, Galveston County Fair and Rodeo keeps on celebrating its Western heritage and pride. So let's dust off your cowboy boots and list five reasons to attend that beloved annual tradition.

1. Kick-off Parade

To raise awareness of the rodeo season and let spectators be a part of the celebration, riders embark on an exciting journey starting at the VFW Post 5400 in Santa Fe. The fairgrounds at  Jack Brooks Park in Hitchcock is the final destination. The parade features multiple floats, marching bands, and trail riders. The kick-off parade happens a week before the rodeo and is free to enjoy and to catch a small throw too.

2. Food

The rodeo food is one-of-a-kind taste buds experience. Come hungry and try a foot-long sausage, chicken on a stick, over-the-top burgers and deep-fried anything. All food is Texas-sized.

3. Carnival

The place has some good variety of rides for little ones who didn't reach the 42" height mark yet. A child can ride once he is 36" tall.

Rides are very affordable. The average price for a ride is 3 tickets (1 ticket = $1) if paid for each ride individually. The all-you-can-ride armband starts at $20 (or $15 with a coupon), except a sneak-a-peek Thursday when the armband can be purchased for $8.

If you visit during the day, stay for the night activities as well, as the grounds get lit and excitement builds up.

4. Special Days Free Admission

There are quite a few free admission days and also, a discounted all-you-can-ride armband ($8) on a sneak-a-peek Thursday, the opening day. Senior Citizens Day, Special Kid's Day and Wednesday are free for admission. Check out the Galveston County Fair & Rodeo website for the discount information and a complete schedule.

Note: Special Days have been cancelled for 2022, check back in 2023.

5. Parking

It's free. Should I say more? If you have ever parked at the Houston Rodeo, with the prices starting at $20, you will appreciate the deal. But make sure to arrive early to get the spot.
