Ice Land at Moody Gardens, Galveston, TX

We used to live close to Galveston, TX, and mostly went there in the summer to laze on the beach or leisurely stroll along Seawall. Truth be told, there's so much more to Galveston than just the beaches. And the holidays are a special time to visit. The annual Dickens on The Strand festival, the holiday lights and decorations throughout the island, and myriad festive events keep visitors' spirit merry and bright.

1. Saengerfest Park, Galveston

Nov. 24 through Jan. 2

Bundle up and head out to downtown Galveston during the holidays. It's steeped in a Victorian holiday charm and millions of twinkling lights. And in the heart of it all there's Saengerfest Park that brims with festivities and illuminated displays. A 30-foot Christmas tree, snowmen, giant snowflakes and interactive displays whisk you away into the holiday season.

2. La King's Confectionery

Ongoing, Weekends
Where: 2323 Strand, Galveston, TX 77550

La King's Confectionery is a sweets shop on the Strand and a must-go place to satisfy your great liking for sweet treats. Enjoy the entertainment of a taffy master making candy on the 100-year old machine and tossing them to customers at no cost.

3. Holiday Window Displays in Downtown Galveston

Where: The Strand

Instead of shopping spree, do some window shopping and Christmas tree crawl around downtown. While browsing the shops, you can find Christmas trees of all shapes, sizes and decor and vote for your favorite one, of course.

4. East End Historic District

The East End Historic District in Galveston is a the most beautiful and elaborately decorated community on the island. Stunning Victorian homes are all decked out for the holidays. Twinkling lights, garlands, wreaths, nutcrackers, and illuminated Christmas displays adorn almost every facade. Just get out there and see it for yourself.

5.  Holidays at Moody Gardens

Nov. 18, 2023 – Jan. 6, 2024

Holiday in the Gardens

You simply cannot complete your visit to the island without visiting Moody Gardens. This is where the magic of Christmas makes miracles happen. From stunning light displays to the one-of-a-kind Ice Land experience, the Gardens is the most happening place on the island. With eight grand winter attractions and more than 100 animated light displays you cannot help but get excited about the holidays.

Moody Gardens, Galveston, TX

The Moody Gardens may have a reputation for being overpriced or overly touristy, but I think it's the local gem that's worth exploring. The grounds and seasonal attractions are truly impressive, and I've found that the atmosphere around the holidays is surprisingly romantic and magical, especially at sunset when the grounds are lit up to the nines.

Galveston's holiday season is a magical time, filled with festive charm and tradition. The island's unique blend of Texas and Victorian-era flair makes it a one-of-a-kind holiday destination that's sure to sweep you off your feet right into the magic of the holiday season.

Where to Next?

River Oaks Lights is a must-see holiday destination in Houston, featuring hundreds of elaborately decorated mansions, making it arguably the best Christmas light display in the city.
