This year, we celebrated the first day of the new year with a short hike at Pleasant Ridge Park in Greenville County, SC. Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, it was originally established in the 1940s for the African-American community. Nowadays this is a well-developed park with a little bit of everything for everyone, including a camp and retreat center, a fishing lake, and tip-top trails for hiking and mountain biking.
Pleasant Ridge Park
The park offers a variety of trails including the Jorge F. Arango (JFA) Trail, the Leroy Smith Trail, Sassy's Pass and the Mill Creek Path.
Leroy Smith Trail
This short less than a mile trail was perfect for us to shake off the post-holiday haze. The scenic, root-riddled trail was full of small wonders,
such as a tucked-away waterfall along the path with benches around it,
the fishing lake and a few play structures for the littlest at the end.
Overall, it's an easy and fun trail with some minor obstacles to navigate, such as root-riddled terrain and a few fallen trees to duck under.
Looking for free winter break activities for kids within an easy driving distance of Greenville, SC? Pleasant Ridge Park, or indeed many local parks, is the perfect cure to boredom.
