Greenville Zoo

The Greenville Zoo is an exciting world of wildlife nestled in the heart of Cleveland Park. Spread across 14 enchanting acres, the zoo features a diverse range of exhibits and landscapes from the sweeping savannahs to the hidden corners of the rainforest. The zoo's small size adds to its charm, making it easy to explore and get up close to the animals

Established in 1960, the Greenville Zoo initially focused on indigenous species native to the Upstate. However, with the addition of a monkey dome for Colobus Monkeys in 1962, the zoo's scope expanded to host a diverse range of animals from around the world, transforming into a global wildlife sanctuary.

Over time, it became a sanctuary to an array of wonderful creatures,  offering visitors a chance to get up close with a wide range of wildlife species.

Travel Across Continents

1. South America

We entered the South America section first and got up close and personal with some amazing animals. The first thing we saw was the screamer bird! Don't be fooled by their small size, there are rumors that their call can be heard for miles. That may be why it's always there to greet the visitors first.

While the loud and attention-seeking neighbors clamored for attention, other birds quietly patrolled the area. Rheas are these large flightless birds native to South America. They are similar to ostriches and are known for their gentle nature, which allows them to get along well with other birds and animals.

The primates were also a highlight, with the Colombian black spider monkeys, black and white lemurs, and colobus monkeys all on display. And let's not forget the Red-tailed guenons, which are quite agile and entertaining to watch.

The reptile enclosure was an incredible experience! We encountered some captivating species, such as the rhinoceros iguana and the enormous yellow python. The rhinoceros iguana is a unique and impressive creature, with its distinctive horn-like protrusions and the ability to grow up to 6 feet. Its massive size, imposing demeanor, and prehistoric appearance commanded respect.

The majestic yellow python will undoubtedly be a sight to behold! Its imposing presence, as if frozen in time, dominates the scene.

2. Asia

We absolutely loved the Asia section! The red panda, with its distinctive reddish-brown coat and bushy tail, was beyond charming. This beautiful creature spent most of its time peacefully eating and resting in the trees.

Even though we missed the chance to see the elusive leopard, which was lounging in the shade of the bushes and away from the visitors' attention, we spent more time near the orangutan enclosure. Did you know that all wild orangutans could be extinct in just 10 years? The orangutan, a critically endangered great ape native to the forests of Indonesia and Malaysia, serves as a heartwarming reminder of the importance of protecting our natural world.

3. Africa

The zoo used to be home to two brother lions, Chuma and Saied. Unfortunately, in March 2024, a 15-year-old Saied passed away due to worsening health issues. Now you can admire only one majestic lion, Chuma, from a brotherly duo,

followed by a delightful family of giraffes. In March 2023, the Greenville Zoo celebrated the arrival of a new addition to the giraffe family, as Autumn, the female Masai giraffe, gave birth to a healthy female calf on March 19, expanding the giraffe family and delighting visitors with the adorable newcomer. The arrival of a new baby giraffe sent a ripple of excitement through the community, drawing in crowds of visitors eager to catch a glimpse of the tiny giraffe's antics.

4. Lagoon

As we made our way out of the Greenville Zoo, we stumbled upon a delightful surprise - a lagoon featuring a flock of flamingos, a farmyard area with adorable animals, and a gator enclosure that showcased the fascinating top predator in its natural habitat.

The zoo's thoughtful design features sections such as an education center, reptile house, South American area, and waterfowl lagoon, offering a comprehensive and engaging exploration of the natural world. All of the animals comfortably adjusted to their new home within the grounds. Every landscape here is a gateway into the world of magnificent wildlife.

Both kids and adults will be captivated by the diverse range of wildlife, making the zoo a perfect destination for family outings, school excursions, or even a peaceful solo escape.

Little moments, BIG Impressions

It's often the small, unplanned moments that can make or break a day, as they can add a spark of excitement and create lasting memories. As we were making our way out of the lagoon exhibit, a tiny, furry creature suddenly darted across our path, causing us to freeze in surprise.

As soon as it appeared, it scurried off into a nearby hole, leaving us stunned, our minds racing with questions about whether it was a stray or a resident of the exhibit's hidden corners.

Although we couldn't quite identify it (judging by its appearance, we're still unsure whether it was a mole or a shrew), the experience was truly unforgettable.

The kids were thrilled to see the little creature, and their excitement continued for days to come.

Playground

With kids, you won't be able to resist the temptation to explore and have fun at the playground whenever you spot one, and the Greenville Zoo has a ship-themed play area in the most scenic shaded corner right across from the giraffe enclosure. Plus, there's a covered area next to the play structures where parents can give their feet a break and keep an eye on their children while they play. You can also catch a glimpse of giraffes from the play grounds and say hello to the giant turtle at the entrance to the play area.
