Whether you're a seasoned sledder or a first-timer, Beech Mountain's free hill promises laughter, fresh air, and unforgettable memories in a picturesque mountain setting.
The first weekend after Thanksgiving, we decided to head to Beech Mountain to beat the holiday crowds and get an early start on the winter fun. We were hoping for a good time, but what we didn’t expect was how perfect the conditions would be. As we drove up to the sledding hill, passing Grandfather Mountain and Banner Elk, we couldn’t believe our eyes—the ground was already covered in a thick blanket of beautiful, natural snow. The sight was almost magical: the town of Beech Mountain looked like something straight out of a winter postcard.
Everywhere you turned, there was a new breathtaking view to take in—snow-covered trees, charming buildings, and sparkling landscapes. It was one of those moments that made you stop and appreciate the magic of it all.
We parked the car and practically ran to the hill, sleds clutched under our arms, excited for the fun ahead. The hill was perfectly inviting, with its soft, white snow glistening in the sunlight. Without wasting any time, we climbed to the top, set our sleds down, and launched ourselves down the slope.
We’d barely catch our breath before we were trudging back up for another run, our excitement growing with every lap. Up and down, again and again—kids tried to go faster, competing with each other. The hill, cushioned at the base, made every landing soft and fun. Even though we were all getting a little out of breath and covered in snow, none of us wanted to stop.
It was one of those days where we forgot about everything else and just had fun. With sleds in hand, we kept going, making memories we’d remember long after the snow melted. And just before we were leaving the hill, an engraved rock reminded us that life is just better on Beech—which means we’ll definitely be back!
What to Know Before You Go to Beech Mountain’s Sledding Hill:
1. Sleds Required: Bring your own plastic sled or rent one from nearby shops. The town requires the use of plastic sleds, and unfortunately, sleds are not provided on the hill. No worries, though—you can easily rent one from nearby spots like Beech Meadows Ski Shop or White Wolf Lodge.
2. Snow Guns in Action: The hill has snow guns that keep the hill nice and snowy all season long. When they’re running, it’s a good idea to cover your face and hands because the blast of snow can be really cold and harsh on your face. A pair of snow goggles or even just regular sun glasses will help you see better, too! The snow guns are across from the parking lot, so just be aware if they’re on while you’re there.
3. Dress Warm: Make sure to dress in layers and wear snow gear and boots—it gets really cold out there! Keeping warm and dry will help you enjoy the fun without feeling uncomfortable. Don’t forget gloves! Waterproof gloves are essential.
4. Hours: Open daily from 9 am to 5 pm, including holidays, from mid-November to March, this family-friendly spot offers a perfect day in the snow. Whether you're racing down the gentle slopes or taking in the scenic beauty, there's no shortage of excitement.
5. Parking: Parking is available for a small fee at a Pay to Park lot across the street for just $3 per hour, but be sure to arrive early—especially on weekends, as the lot fills up quickly.
6. Public restrooms are also available for convenience.
7. Lunch Break: You can check out the nearby Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria! It’s a local favorite, offering delicious pizza and cozy vibes, perfect for refueling after a day of sledding.
8. Snow Conditions: Want to know what the snow’s looking like before you go? You can call the Visitor Center at 800-468-5506 or check out live webcams for real-time snow conditions at Beech Mountain Webcams. Don't miss out on this winter gem—Beech Mountain’s free sledding hill is the perfect destination to create lasting memories with friends and family!
9. Safety: The hill is cushioned at the base for a softer landing. The area is also fenced in for safety.
