There's no better place to experience the liveliness of autumn than the mountains. So on Sunday morning, we packed hiking shoes and went into the wilderness to glimpse everything turn orange and burgundy. We spent the day hiking, paddling on the mountain lake, and kicking the ball in the open green spaces. It was a family day for the books and we didn't even know we loved the mountains.
Paris Mountain State Park
Famous for its numerous hiking paths, a 15-acre lake, and many family-friendly activities,
this park is a nature lover's gold. It's also a
fun fall foliage adventure when the summer gives up its rein. There are lots
of beautiful trails to take through the woods and red-and-gold tunnels of whirling
leaves. Located just 5 miles north of Greenville, it's a perfect destination to plan and explore for a day trip.
Park Center
There's a small gift shop with fun educational displays to learn a few things about local wildlife in the Park Center. Apparel, accessories, and gear are also available for sale.
Kids had fun learning about aquatic animals and them being an indicator of clean water. Lifting the rocks to see what hides underneath was even more fun.
Lake Placid
This lake is a crowd-puller with many fun, recreational activities for the whole family and a relaxing loop around it. There are campsites, picnic areas, hiking trails, bank fishing, public swimming area, a playground, and irresistible views.
Canoes, kayaks, and pedal boats are all available for rent for a small fee. We rented a pedal boat for $5. They also provide life jackets, kid-size included, to enjoy the water safely. Boat rental is open on weekends only, in spring and fall, so plan accordingly.
Lake Placid Dam
Lake Placid Trail
Any trail in the mountains in the fall is simply awe-inspiring. We started with a loop around Lake Placid. Less than one mile, it's easy to track with little kids in tow. Explosions of colors at every turn give you a magnificent backdrop for exploration and family photos. So breathtaking it's unreal.
