I've been so eager to tell you about this awesome place. While on a road trip to the Smokies, I was in the mood for a pit stop among rolling mountains, serene lakes, unspoiled nature, and peace - and Lake Junalushka was the place we stumbled upon at the last moment that satisfied all these yearnings.
As soon as we parked, we quickly headed straight to the lake. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the lake I had thought would be ordinary turned out to be remarkably beautiful, with plenty of fun activities to enjoy. Tucked away in the Blue Ridge, far from the bustling tourist spots, the
lake is like its own little world, brimming with natural beauty and
tranquility. It's easy to see how you could fall in love with it.
The Fascinating Story of Lake Junaluska
Did you know that Lake Junaluska is a beautiful 213-acre lake located in Haywood County, North Carolina? It has a fascinating history dating back to the early 19th century. It was created by building a dam on the West Fork of the Pigeon River in 1847. Interestingly, the lake got its name from nearby Mount Junaluska (now North Eaglenest Mountain), which was named after a Cherokee leader in the early 19th century.
Initially, it was meant to provide hydroelectric power and
water supply for the nearby town of Waynesville. In the early
20th century, a group of Presbyterian missionaries bought the lake and
surrounding land. They set up the Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat
Center, which has since become a cherished destination for spiritual
retreats and conferences.
Over the years, the lake has become a popular spot for activities like swimming, fishing, and boating, attracting visitors from all over the region. You'll always have things to do on this 200-acre mountain lake, from kayaking and enjoying the outdoor lakeside pool to taking a leisurely walk around the lake and exploring its many beautiful spots.
After taking a moment to appreciate the beauty around us, we embarked on a peaceful stroll along the 3.7-mile paved trail encircling the lake, passing by the enchanting rose garden and tranquil lakeside pool before crossing the bridge.
This delightful local resident brought an extra layer of charm.
Opposite the lakeside pool entrance, we discovered a small yet really lovely playground that provided kids with the perfect opportunity to climb, swing, and slide their way to pure joy.
Despite the limited time, we made sure to squeeze in a visit to Inspiration Point, a spot that will leave a lasting impression on anyone who visits.
