The North Carolina Arboretum
We spent the day wandering through the North Carolina Arboretum in Asheville, where fall colors were still glowing and the first signs of the holidays were starting to appear. The air was crisp, the trails peaceful, and the coffee from the garden café made it all feel extra cozy. There’s something special about visiting this time of year — when autumn hasn’t quite said goodbye, and winter is just beginning to sparkle.

We try to visit in early November every year. The foliage is usually at its peak, and there’s always something new being set up for the holidays. It’s the best of both worlds: one last burst of fall color mixed with the excitement of the festive season ahead.

Every corner seemed to be in transition — golden leaves underfoot, twinkling lights going up overhead, and crews preparing for the Winter Lights exhibit. The gardens buzzed quietly with that behind-the-scenes anticipation of something wonderful.

If you haven’t been, the Arboretum’s Winter Lights is one of the most enchanting holiday light displays in the Carolinas — perfect for families, date nights, or a cozy evening stroll. Tickets are already on sale, and the event runs through early January, so plan ahead for those evening glows!

Whether you come for the fall colors, the peaceful trails, or the sparkle of the season, this time of year at the NC Arboretum is pure magic.

Tip: Bring a thermos, wear layers, and don’t forget to grab a warm drink at the Garden Café before exploring!
