The Ultimate Family Weekend Getaway in Brevard, NC

For years, our family treated Brevard, North Carolina, as nothing more than a pit stop.We would stretch our legs on the way to Looking Glass Falls, or pass right through during our other mountain excursions. We never gave it a second thought. We never took the time to actually pull over, park the car, and explore what Brevard itself had to offer. What a mistake that was—and what a massive surprise it turned out to be.

On a recent trip, we decided to finally break our routine. Instead of driving straight through, we went out of our regular way, turned into the heart of downtown, and decided to see what Brevard had been keeping secret from us all this time.

It turns out, this little mountain town is an absolute goldmine for families. Here is how our accidental discovery turned into our favorite weekend getaway.

The Waterfalls

Transylvania County is called the "Land of Waterfalls" for a reason, and you don’t need to be an expert hiker to enjoy them. While we had seen these sights before, slowing down to experience them in a new season completely changed our perspective.

Looking Glass Falls: This was our usual quick-stop spot in between seasons. While we had visited it multiple times during the beautiful fall months, we had never actually been here during the summer—and let me tell you, summer changes the whole experience!

Instead of just admiring it from the viewing platform, the warm weather allowed us to finally get down into the action. The kids were thrilled to wade into the crisp, cool creek waters right at the bottom of the roaring 60-foot drop.

It felt like a completely different destination.

Moore Cove Falls: A gentle, 1.5-mile round-trip walk leads you to a ledge where you can stand directly behind a curtain of falling water. It feels like a secret jungle hideout.

Daniel Ridge Falls: A short, easy hike brings you face-to-face with a stunning 150-foot cascading waterfall that offers amazing family photo spots without the heavy crowds

Spotting the Magic: Brevard's White Squirrels

If you told me a town could be famous for its squirrels, I would have laughed. But Brevard is home to a unique population of white squirrels. They aren't albino; they have distinct white coats and dark eyes.We packed a picnic and walked around the Brevard College campus. Within twenty minutes, the kids were having a blast treating the campus grounds like a real-life scavenger hunt.

Keep your eyes peeled—they are surprisingly easy to spot if you just sit still for a moment!

Discovering a Toy Lover’s Paradise Downtown

When we finally explored downtown Brevard, we stumbled upon the crown jewel of the trip: O.P. Taylor’s.We had no idea this place existed, but it is easily one of the best toy stores in the South. It spans two massive stories and over 12,000 square feet of pure fun.

What sets it apart is that it isn't just a place to buy things—it is entirely interactive. The absolute highlight for our family was the massive indoor slot-car racetrack tucked right inside the store. It immediately grabbed the kids' attention, and we ended up spending over an hour right there. They were completely transfixed, gripping the controllers, cheering each other on, and racing the cars at full speed down the straightaways to cross the finish line first.

The friendly, competitive energy around the track was infectious. Between intense race tournaments, testing out hands-on games, and exploring walls of LEGOs and puzzles, it felt more like a mini indoor theme park than a retail shop.

Stepping Back in Time at Rocky’s Grill & Soda Shop

The moment you walk through the doors of Rocky’s Grill & Soda Shop in downtown Brevard, you instantly feel like you’ve been dropped straight into the 1950s. The energy in here is just amazing.

I loved soaking in the view from the classic red-and-white vinyl booths, surrounded by vintage metal signs and cool neon lights that spell out the town's history. It is the ultimate spot to take a break, grab a hand-spun milkshake, and just enjoy the nostalgic, small-town Americana vibe.

If you are ever exploring western North Carolina, you absolutely have to add this lunch counter to your itinerary!

Getting Out in Nature at the Cradle of Forestry

To round out our weekend, we took a short drive into the Pisgah National Forest to the Cradle of Forestry in America. This historic site features paved, stroller-friendly trails that wind past a historic 1915 logging locomotive and old cabins. Inside the discovery center, the kids climbed aboard a helicopter simulator and played with hands-on nature exhibits. It perfectly balanced outdoor exploration with interactive learning.

What We Learned (Our Secret Tips)

Pack water shoes: The rocks at the base of the waterfalls are slippery. Real water shoes make exploring much safer.

Download your maps ahead of time: Cell service drops completely once you enter the Pisgah National Forest.

Arrive early: Now that the secret is out, parking lots at popular spots like Looking Glass Falls fill up fast on summer weekends.

Don't make the same mistake we did for years. Stop passing through, pull the car over, and let Brevard surprise your family, too.
