Franklin isn't a place where you need a long list of attractions to have a good time, although there are plenty to choose from! Its charm is in the little things: colorful leaves, pretty storefronts, quiet streets, and that cozy mountain-town feeling. If you love exploring small towns in the fall as much as I do, add Franklin, North Carolina, to your autumn travel list.
Tucked away in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, Franklin has that old-fashioned small-town charm that feels especially inviting when the leaves start changing colors.
If you're looking for a relaxing fall day trip from Greenville, SC, Franklin is definitely worth adding to your list!
Downtown Franklin Is Especially Charming in the Fall
One of my favorite things about visiting mountain towns in October is seeing how everything looks surrounded by fall colors.
Franklin’s town square is especially lovely in the fall, with its charming gazebo, colorful autumn trees,
and inviting benches that make it a perfect spot to slow down and enjoy the season.
Downtown Franklin has a lovely Main Street lined with historic buildings,
locally owned shops,
restaurants, and cute storefronts.
In autumn, colorful trees,
seasonal decorations,
and the mountain backdrop make an ordinary downtown stroll feel a little more special.
And the best part? You don't need a packed itinerary to enjoy it. Sometimes it's enough to walk around, explore little side streets,
take pictures, and soak up the atmosphere.
Take a Stroll Along Main Street
Historic downtown Franklin is easy to explore on foot, making it a nice stop for families.
You can browse little boutiques, discover local gifts, look at the historic architecture, or stop for something sweet.
I especially love towns where you can park your car and simply wander around.
No rushing from one attraction to another, just enjoying the little things along the way.
If you're visiting with kids, a casual downtown walk is also a nice break between scenic drives and outdoor adventures. Plus, kids will get a kick out of spotting all the fun scarecrows dotted around downtown!
Enjoy the Beautiful Fall Colors
Franklin is surrounded by the mountains of Western North Carolina, which makes it a wonderful destination for fall foliage.
Even the drive into town can be part of the experience, with winding mountain roads, colorful trees, and beautiful scenery.
October is a particularly lovely time to visit, although the timing of peak colors changes each year depending on the weather and elevation.
For even more mountain scenery, you can extend your trip with a drive toward Highlands or explore some of the nearby waterfalls and forest trails.
Visit During Franklin's PumpkinFest
If you enjoy small-town fall festivals, Franklin has a fun October tradition called PumpkinFest.
Historic downtown fills with vendors, crafts, food, costumes, and family-friendly activities.
One of the most unusual attractions is the famous Pumpkin Roll, where participants send pumpkins racing down a hill!
It's a fun way to experience the town with a little extra fall excitement.
Make It a Fall Day Trip From Greenville, SC
Franklin makes a wonderful destination for a day trip or a stop on a longer mountain road trip.
You can spend the morning enjoying the scenery, explore downtown in the afternoon, and continue toward Highlands or Cashiers if you have extra time.
I love combining a cute mountain town with a scenic drive because you get a little bit of everything: colorful leaves, local shops, beautiful views, and a relaxing change of scenery.
Beautiful inside and out, Franklin is worth visiting no matter the season. But there's something especially magical about this little mountain town in the fall. Sometimes the simplest outings turn into the loveliest memories.
