Upper Whitewater Falls in NC

Another day, another mountain conquered. I can confirm the mountain slopes covered in blazing seasonal colors  are the best thing about the fall. All the colors just sweep you off your feet and take your breath away. This time we got charmed by the Whitewater Falls' spectacular 411-foot cascading plunge. It's nothing if not a prime example of breathtaking mountain beauty.

As soon as we got out of the car, we made a beeline for the observation platform to see the cascading waterfall. Through the golden tunnels of leaves, down the Foothills Trail, we headed toward the whisper of tumbling waters deep in the heart of the Nantahala National Forest.

Winding through tall trees, there were wooden sets of stairs, leading to a viewing platform.

Halfway down, we stopped to enjoy panoramic views of mountain slopes peeking through trees. Covered in brilliant fall foliage, they shimmered in the setting sun.

Whitewater Falls

Whitewater Falls is a chain of waterfalls on the Whitewater River along the North and South Carolina border. The Upper Falls, located in the Jocassee Gorge area of North Carolina, plunges 411 feet. The Lower Falls has a 200-foot drop and is a few miles downstream in South Carolina.

Suddenly, we were caught off guard by the most breathtaking view. A spectacular cascade rushing over giant boulders illuminated by the radiant light of a setting sun greeted our arrival.

We weren't ready to leave when it was time to go home. So we stayed longer than expected, making piles of leaves, jumping into them, breathing in that fresh mountain air, and reveling in all the majestic unsurpassed fall scenery.

After some happy jumps into leaf piles, we headed toward the parking lot and some more dancing and jumping in the leaves.

If you find yourself in this neck of the woods, especially in the peak of leaf season during October, drive up to this magical place. A winding mountain road is a sight in itself.

Note: All these pictures were taken on 11/4 last year. So if you are looking for a quick road trip to catch those blazing fall color displays and have family pictures taken without a hike, look no further than this magnificent cascading waterfall near Cashiers, NC.

 What's More?

If you are in the area, don't miss the 7.5-mile stretch of the Mountain Waters Scenic Byway between Franklin and Highlands, NC. It's home to the Cullasaja Gorge and its fours breathtaking roadside waterfalls. One of the waterfalls - Dry Falls, has a winding platform to walk behind the cascade.
