Melrose Falls Trail is a 1.1-mile out-and-back trail a few miles from Tryon, NC. Besides a few easy obstacles, such as a small stream to rock hop or a few fallen trees to duck under, the trail is wide and clear, and the falls at the end are simply breathtaking. Even on a gloomy, drizzly winter day, its beauty couldn't be hidden.
The road from downtown Tryon to the trailhead is a sight in itself. You pass a few falls along the way, including the Melrose Falls that peek through the trees in the distance. The best part about hiking in the winter is the unobstructed views.
We started our hike on the side of the road by the gate.
Melrose Falls Trail
It was an easy and beautiful walk with some cool exposed roots,
bent tree trunks that my kids made into a swing, and pretty cool rock formations along the way.
Even though leaves had completely fallen off the trees, there was still some vibrancy and color to the woods. I just love winter in the Carolinas.
There were a few small streams that we had to rock hop
and some fallen trees we went under.
However, the descent to the falls is steep and can be quite challenging to navigate, especially when going down the slope. We sort of zig-zagged down it using some rocks and exposed roots as foot holds to gain a purchase on slippery ground. So when navigating this last bit of the trail, proceed with caution. If in doubt, stay on the main section of the trail above the rocky outcrop area. You can still safely enjoy the views.
The cliff overlooking the falls has a very tall and steep side, so we didn’t feel comfortable letting the kids roam around freely and went back up to the main section of the trail above the rocky cliff almost immediately.
Melrose Falls
The falls are breathtaking though. The roaring water crashing against a boulder in the middle of the falls creates a dramatic sight.
What to Know Before You Go:
- Parking is scarce. There is one pocket for a couple of cars at the trailhead near the gate and a few more down the road. We visited on a weekday in cooler weather, so we didn’t have a problem finding a spot, but for those visiting on weekends it could be an issue.
- Hike at your own risk. There are a couple of signs along the trail, one at the trailhead and the other right before the final descent to the cliff overlooking the falls, that warn you to hike at your own risk because the trail is not actively maintained. However, the path is wide and clear overall.
- The cliff overlooking the falls is steep and dangerous, as well as the slope leading to it. If hiking with the kids or pets, proceed with caution or remain on the main section of the trail above the rocky cliff area.
- If you turn right at the fork near the falls, the path will take you to an abandoned railroad above the waterfall, which gives you a bird's-eye view of this natural wonder. Be mindful of loose rocks on the final ascend to the railroad track though.

If you are in the area, you can also visit the NORMAN WILDER FOREST for rather a quick and easy hike. These woods don't have dramatic waterfall views but can definitely give you a chance to enjoy nature without breaking a sweat. Another great hike and by far our favorite one in this area is Pearson's Falls. Don't miss it.
