Dressed up in colorful yarn wraps, these trees in front of the Helen Hall Library in League City just stole my heart. Thanks to League City's Every Stitch Way Club, the library grounds now look like something out of a fairy tale.
A dozen trees have just gotten their
hand-tailored outfits, and a dozen more are in line to get theirs. Each
yarn cuff is a one-of-a-kind design with its own pattern and color
scheme. These yarn bombs take knitting to the next level, stir up the way we look at the world around us, and make the library so much more exciting to visit.
Every Stitch Way Club, a local knitting group, created this art display
as a part of League City’s Public Art Initiative. This program turns
public spaces in League City into open-air galleries, making the
community a much more vibrant and happier place to live in.
The Walk
It was one of those mornings with all the kids at home when you make it up as you go. Without any planned activities for the day, we decided to go to a local library. Driving down the road, I spied the row of trees wrapped in colorful yarn designs. Each one is a work of art.
Of course, after driving past the trees, I couldn't help but go and see the art display up close.
Here are some more patterns up close.
Like a cherry on top of a cake, these colorful pom-poms tie it all up beautifully, adding a finishing touch to the pattern.
I couldn't get enough of this fairy land.
One of my favorites is this wrap with oversized flowers. It couldn't be more fitting for the season.
Yarn Bombing
Yarn bombing is a form of street art that transforms public places with yarns. Yarn
bombers use hand-knitted pieces to wrap around mundane city objects,
giving them a second life to be seen, appreciated, and related to by
the community.
Even the smallest yarn bombs, such as
mailboxes or sign
poles, can transform the city landscape into a captivating homey
environment. At the very least, they can put a smile on a someone's
face.
The idea of wrapping objects in yarn in an urban
environment is a relatively new practice and gaining its momentum in
every town around the world. Magda
Sayeg from Houston is believed to be the pioneer of the contemporary
yarn bombing movement and is also the one who coined the term.
The yarn cuffs will stay on the tree trunks through the summer. If you are in the area, stop by the Helen Hall Library in League City to enjoy this cool art display.
