High Shoals Falls

This is an absolutely stunning 80-foot waterfall in South Mountains State Park, NC. The 2-mile hike (round trip) is easy at first, but gets more challenging the closer you get to the falls. The last stretch of the trail is a vertical scramble up flights of slippery stairs, but the breathtaking views are so worth it.

We love chasing the falls, but today we opted for a hike to the base of the cliffs in Norman Wilder Forest in Western North Carolina, where we were pleasantly surprised with our first “spring” sighting. The first, bright pops of wild daffodils are sprouting up along the trails. Even though the skies are still overcast and the weather will likely catch us off guard with a blizzard or two, new life is already stirring out there. What a beautiful sight to see in January.

Just behind the crest of the Blue Ridge, there's the village of Blowing Rock, a small mountain town that looks like something out of a fairy tale. Its historic downtown buzzing with a 19th century charm, authentic little shops with the doors wide open, tucked-away green terraces, and spectacular majestic mountain views everywhere you look will sweep you right off your feet. I doubt there's a more charming town on the planet in the Carolinas.
